Census as Ritual Risk: From Mari tēbibtum to Biblical kipper

This article examines why census-taking is associated with plague and ritual danger in the Hebrew Bible. Exodus 30:12 requires a ransom to prevent plague during a census, while 2 Samuel 24 depicts David’s census as followed by a devastating pestilence. Rather than interpreting the census as a violation of divine sovereignty or as an inherently ominous act of counting, this article argues, based on the “embodied cognition” model, that census-taking became ritually dangerous because it was closely linked to military mobilization and the collective risks of war, death, corpse contamination, and epidemic disease.
The argument begins with the Mari texts, where census-taking is designated by the Akkadian term tēbibtum, “purification.” This terminology suggests that the census was not merely an administrative procedure but an event requiring ritual management. In the Hebrew Bible, however, the corresponding response is expressed through כפר, a term associated with ransom, expiation, and atonement. This shift from tēbibtum to כפר reflects the conceptual convergence of impurity and transgression as dangerous conditions capable of generating communal disaster. The census therefore provides a case study for the integration of purification and atonement in biblical ritual thought.
